A wire gauze, or wire mesh, is a sheet of thin metal that has a net-like weave. Wire gauze is placed on top of a stand positioned between a Bunsen burner and the glassware to be heated. Wire gauze diffuses heat from the burner flame to help protect the glassware from breaking over direct heat. Intended for flat-bottomed glassware such as beakers, and flasks.
