Calibrated Hand Microtome with Folding Utility Knife. This easy to use microtome lets you cut sections up to 10 microns thin. Equipped with a clamping mechanism for securing various shapes and sizes of objects. Sturdy specimens, like carrot, can be loaded and cut without wax. Delicate specimens, like a root tip, will need to be encased in parafin in order to cut a clean section. A threaded piston screws into the stage to advance the specimen through the central tube. The dial at the bottom of the instrument moves the piston up or down the central tube when rotated, either back or forth.
The calibration marks on the dial align with a guide mark to measure graduations. A thumb-screw at the side of the tube controls an arm that tightens against the specimen for extra stabilization.* Sections are cut by drawing a knife over the flat surface of the instrument. We believe this device is stellar in it's class. The instrument is well made, from the metal housing, to the glass cutting plate, to the much improved cutting razor. We have offered several models over the years, but none of which would meet that standards of tis United Scientific model. They've improved their own design - and packaging - and we have found a winner. We hope you will agree!
